Gayatri is one of the gentlest forms of Mother Divine. She is regarded throughout the world and is a form of the divine that is still effective in helping us break free from worldly illusions and brings us closer to our ultimate goal – moksha or complete liberation.

The Gayatri mantra is well known throughout the world thanks to yoga, kirtan, and the Vedic tradition. Her mantra is classically recited, sung, or chanted before doing any spiritual work. This powerful mantra is still infusing lives with her blessings and uplifting the hearts of many.

The Origins of Gayatri Mantra

The origins of the mantra go back to a great Saint Vishvamitra who meditated for 1,000 years in a special process to get his way into a heaven. As a part of his diksha (guidelines for a spiritual process), he was not allowed to make love to anyone. Right before winning (completing) his process a beautiful woman appeared in front of him dancing. Vishvamitra saw her and broke that very important diksha point. He failed his 1,000-year process. Afterward feeling tricked by Mother Divine (who can resist a sublime goddess?), Vishvamitra pleaded with other great Saints to let him into their heaven. He pointed out the unfairness of being tricked by her. They turned him down again and again. Angered Vishvamitra took his austerity power and created a new kind of heaven, one where Mother Divine doesn’t throw her illusions on you. Vishvamitra made the Gayatri mantra, energy and a goddess that doesn’t play illusions on you.

What We Can Learn From Vishvamitra

Vishvamitra was a great Saint with some serious dedication and serious spiritual power. Meditating 1,000 years to win a spiritual process is quite a feat. Still at the end of it he lost his original aim and he failed his process. There are times in our lives where we put so much energy into a specific outcome and still at the end of the day the illusions of the world undo our hard work leaving us feeling defeated. Vishvamitra didn’t give up entirely, instead he took all that austerity power and created something really beautiful to benefit the rest of the world. We too can take our failures and all the lessons learned along the way and apply them to something positive. Turning our failures into triumphs for others. Vishvamitra didn’t give up on his dreams, he got creative and channeled his anger into something beautiful. We can do that as well! Now the Gayatri is enjoyed all around the world and is one of the most powerful mantras for spiritual growth and uplifting humanity.

Welcoming Gayatri Into Your Life

This gentle form of Mother Divine is heavenly to welcome into your life. There are several ways in which you can connect to her and call her energy into your life.

  • Putting a picture or statue (murti) of her on your altar and honor it daily with fresh flowers, incense, mantras, and prayers.
  • Saying the Gayatri mantra at sunrise or sunset. This practice boosts inspiration, lifts depression and creates deep peace in your soul. Sit facing the sun while repeating the mantra.
  • Singing the Gayatri mantra. This can be more formally like a kirtan or bhajan (both Indian styles of devotional singing) or it can be sung during your day-to-day life. I love singing her mantra while I take care of my household and garden (plants love it).
  • Practicing the qualities of Gayatri in our day-to-day life. These are peace, kindness, patience, love and forgiveness.
  • Starting a mantra meditation practice with the Gayatri mantra. You can start your mantra meditation practice by reciting the Gayatri mantra 108 times for 41 days. It’s best to recite the mantra at the same time every day. If you can do this while having the sunrise hit your face even better!

The Gayatri Mantra and Meaning

Om bhur bhuvah suvaha

Tat savitur varenyam

Bhargo devasya dhimahi

Rig-Veda 3.62.10: Oh, dear Divine Mother (Gayatri) we are meditating (Dhimahi) on your radiant, (Devasya) spiritual light (Bhargo)!
